Sri Lanka is expected to experience several spells of showers across parts of the country on 11 September 2026, Rainy conditions are expected mainly over the southwestern parts of the island, while some areas in the central hills and eastern regions may also experience showers or thundershowers during the afternoon.
Several spells of showers will occur in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as in the Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara districts. Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers may develop at a few places in the Uva and Eastern provinces and in the Mullaittivu district after 2.00 p.m. These afternoon thunderstorms could be accompanied by temporary localized strong winds and lightning.
The general public is advised to take adequate precautions during thundershowers to minimize possible damage caused by sudden strong winds and lightning. People engaged in outdoor activities should remain alert when thunderstorms develop in their area.
MARINE WEATHER
Marine weather conditions will also require attention during the next 24 hours. Showers may occur at a few places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Matara via Colombo and Galle.
Southwesterly winds are expected over the surrounding sea areas, with speeds generally between 30 and 40 kmph. Wind speeds may occasionally increase to 50–60 kmph in the sea areas extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil. Winds may also increase up to around 50 kmph in the sea areas extending from Chilaw to Trincomalee via Mannar and Kankasanthurai.
Sea conditions will be rough at times from Hambantota to Pottuvil and fairly rough at times from Chilaw to Trincomalee. Wave heights may increase to about 2.0–2.5 metres in the sea areas extending from Colombo to Pottuvil via Galle, Matara and Hambantota. Fishermen, sailors and other marine users are advised to remain cautious while planning activities in these areas.
