China has warned of a high risk of a barrier lake near the Nepal-Tibet border breaching its banks and causing a second major flood downstream. The warning comes just days after a deadly flash flood struck the same region, leaving hundreds of people dead or missing.
The barrier lake was formed after landslide debris blocked the flow of rivers near the border. According to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, around 2.5 million cubic metres of water had accumulated in the lake by Friday morning. Officials expect another three million cubic metres of water to enter the lake, increasing the risk of a sudden breach.
China’s Ministry of Water Resources said the lake has already begun overflowing, while heavy rainfall in the area has added to concerns. Engineering teams have been sent to monitor water levels and weather conditions.
The growing danger has also disrupted rescue efforts. Chinese emergency personnel have reportedly been unable to reach areas close to Gyirong Port, a major crossing between Nepal and China, because the lake is overflowing continuously. Search and rescue operations near the border have been suspended due to fears of further flooding and debris flows.
Nepali authorities have also warned residents about possible blockages and flooding along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers. People have been advised to stay away from riverbanks until the danger passes.
Scientists believe the earlier flash flood was triggered by the collapse of part of a glacier near Langtang Lirung, sending a powerful surge of water and debris downstream. The continuing threat highlights the serious risks posed by unstable glaciers, landslides and heavy rainfall in the Himalayan region.
