The Department of Meteorology has issued a warm weather advisory for residents in the Eastern Province and several districts, including Polonnaruwa, Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Vavuniya and Monaragala.
According to the advisory, the heat index—the temperature felt by the human body—is expected to reach the ‘Caution Level’ at some locations during the daytime tomorrow (28). The heat index is determined using factors such as relative humidity and maximum temperature and indicates how hot conditions may feel to people.
The Department of Meteorology has warned that prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and strenuous outdoor activities could result in fatigue. Continued physical activity under hot conditions may also increase the risk of heat cramps.
Residents in the affected areas are therefore advised to take precautions to reduce the impact of the warm weather. People should drink plenty of water and stay hydrated throughout the day, particularly when spending time outdoors.
The public is also encouraged to limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest periods and seek shade whenever possible. Employers and outdoor workers should take regular breaks to reduce heat exposure.
