Sri Lanka is expected to experience a mix of showers, strong winds and mainly dry conditions across different parts of the island on 25 August 2026.
Showers are expected at times in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the districts of Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara. Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm is likely at some locations in these areas. Residents should remain alert to changing weather conditions, particularly during periods of heavier rainfall.
Several spells of showers may also occur in the North-Western Province, while a few showers are possible in the Anuradhapura district. In the eastern and southeastern parts of the island, including Ampara, Monaragala and Batticaloa districts, showers or thundershowers may develop at a few places after 2.00 p.m. Mainly dry weather is expected to prevail over most other areas.
Fairly strong winds of around 30–40 kmph may occur at times over the western slopes of the Central Hills, the Northern, North-Central and North-Western provinces, and in the districts of Trincomalee, Monaragala, Hambantota and Matale. The public is advised to take precautions against temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
Sea Areas Around Sri Lanka
Showers may occur at a few places in sea areas from Negombo to Matara via Colombo and Galle. South-westerly winds are expected at speeds of 30–40 kmph.
Wind speeds may increase to 50–60 kmph in sea areas from Mullaitivu to Chilaw via Kankasanthurai and Mannar, and from Hambantota to Pottuvil. Other sea areas may experience winds of up to 45–50 kmph.
These sea areas are expected to be rough at times, while other surrounding waters may become fairly rough. Wave heights may reach approximately 2.0–2.5 metres from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Matara. Naval and fishing communities are advised to remain vigilant.
