Showery weather is expected to continue in several parts of Sri Lanka on Monday, 24 August 2026, while strong winds are also forecast over a number of provinces and districts.
Showers will occur at times in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the districts of Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara. Several spells of showers may also affect the North-Western Province. Meanwhile, a few showers or thundershowers may develop in the Ampara, Monaragala and Batticaloa districts after 2.00 p.m.
Mainly dry weather is expected to prevail across most other parts of Sri Lanka. However, fairly strong winds of around 30–40 kmph can be expected at times over the western slopes of the Central Hills, the North-Central and North-Western provinces, and the Mannar, Trincomalee, Hambantota and Matale districts. The public is advised to take necessary precautions against temporary localized strong winds and lightning associated with thundershowers.
Rough Sea Conditions Around Sri Lanka
South-westerly winds will prevail over the sea areas around the island, with general wind speeds of 30–40 kmph. Wind speeds may increase to 50–60 kmph at times in the sea areas from Kankasanthurai to Chilaw via Mannar and from Hambantota to Pottuvil. Other sea areas may experience winds of up to 45–50 kmph.
These sea areas are expected to be rough at times, while other surrounding waters may become fairly rough. Wave heights may rise to approximately 2.0–2.5 metres in the sea areas from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Matara.
Naval and fishing communities operating in the affected sea areas are urged to remain vigilant and pay close attention to weather conditions before engaging in marine activities.
