Sri Lanka is expected to experience unsettled weather conditions on Sunday, 16 August 2026, with several areas receiving showers and occasional thundershowers. , several spells of showers will occur in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western provinces, as well as in the Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara districts.
A few showers or thundershowers may develop in the Uva Province and in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts after 2.00 p.m. Residents in areas affected by thundershowers are advised to remain cautious, as temporary localized strong winds and lightning could occur. The public is urged to take adequate precautions to minimize possible damage.
Fairly strong winds of around 30–40 kmph are also expected at times over the Northern, North-Central, North-Western and Southern provinces and in the Trincomalee district.
Sea Areas Forecast
Showers may occur at several places in the sea areas extending from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle during the next 24 hours.
Winds around the island will be westerly to south-westerly, with speeds of 30–40 kmph. Wind speeds could increase to 50–60 kmph at times in the sea areas from Kankasanthurai to Chilaw via Mannar and Puttalam, and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota. Winds may also reach 45–50 kmph in other sea areas.
Sea conditions from Kankasanthurai to Chilaw and from Matara to Pottuvil will be rough at times, while other areas may become fairly rough. Naval and fishing communities operating in the affected areas are advised to remain vigilant and follow the latest weather updates.
