Sri Lanka Weather Forecast for 07 August 2026: Heavy Showers, Strong Winds and Rough Seas Expected

Sri Lanka is expected to experience wet and windy weather on 07 August 2026, with showers, thunderstorms and strong winds affecting several parts of the island. According to the latest weather forecast issued at 5.30 a.m., cloudy conditions will continue over the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western provinces, as well as the districts of Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara.

Showers or thundershowers are expected at times in these areas throughout the day. Residents in the Sabaragamuwa Province and the districts of Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara should be prepared for fairly heavy rainfall of around 75 mm at some locations. Localized flooding in low-lying areas and temporary disruptions to travel are possible where heavy showers persist.

Strong winds with speeds of 40–50 kmph are also expected at times across the North-Central, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central and North-Western provinces. The public is advised to take necessary precautions to minimize damage caused by strong wind gusts, falling tree branches and lightning during thunderstorms. Those travelling during periods of heavy rain should remain alert and avoid flooded roads whenever possible.

Sea Conditions and Marine Forecast

Weather conditions at sea will remain hazardous over the next 24 hours. Showers or thundershowers are expected in the sea areas extending from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle.

Winds will blow from the west to southwest at 30–40 kmph, increasing to 60–70 kmph in the sea areas from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota. Winds may also reach 50–60 kmph from Kankasanthurai to Matara via Puttalam, Colombo and Galle.

The sea off the coast from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota will be rough to very rough, and naval and fishing communities are strongly advised not to venture into these waters until further notice. Other sea areas from Kankasanthurai to Matara via Puttalam, Colombo and Galle will also remain rough, requiring extreme caution.

Wave heights between 2.5 and 3.0 metres are expected from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota. Mariners should remain vigilant, as temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas are likely during thundershowers.
