Sri Lanka Weather Forecast for 04 August 2026: Heavy Rain, Strong Winds and Rough Seas Expected
The Department of Meteorology has forecast unsettled weather across much of Sri Lanka for 04 August 2026, with heavy rainfall, strong winds and rough sea conditions expected in several parts of the country. Residents in vulnerable areas are advised to remain alert and take necessary precautions as adverse weather conditions continue.
Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western provinces, as well as in the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara districts. The heaviest rainfall is expected in Sabaragamuwa Province and the Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts, where rainfall exceeding 100 mm is likely at some locations. Such heavy rain could lead to localized flooding, waterlogging and difficult travel conditions.
Several spells of showers are also forecast for the North-Central Province, while Uva and Eastern provinces and the Mullaitivu District may experience showers or thundershowers after 2.00 p.m.
In addition to heavy rain, strong winds of 40–50 kmph are expected at times over the North-Central, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central and North-Western provinces, as well as the Trincomalee District. The public is advised to secure loose outdoor objects and remain cautious during thunderstorms, as temporary localized strong winds and lightning may pose additional hazards.
Sea Conditions
Weather conditions at sea are expected to remain hazardous over the next 24 hours. Showers or thundershowers will affect sea areas extending from Puttalam to Trincomalee via Colombo, Galle, Hambantota and Batticaloa.
South-westerly winds will generally range between 30–40 kmph, but could strengthen to 60–70 kmph in the sea areas from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota. Winds may also increase to 50–60 kmph from Puttalam to Galle via Colombo.
The sea will be rough to very rough, particularly from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota, where naval and fishing communities are strongly advised not to venture into these waters until further notice. Wave heights may reach 2.5 to 3.0 metres from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota. Mariners should remain vigilant, as temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas are likely during thundershowers.
