The Department of Meteorology forecasts a mix of isolated showers and strong winds across several parts of Sri Lanka on 02 July 2026. While widespread rainfall is not expected, residents in a number of provinces should remain alert for occasional showers and gusty weather conditions.
A few showers are forecast in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western provinces, as well as in the districts of Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya. Although rainfall is expected to be limited, temporary thundershowers may develop in some areas. The public is advised to take necessary precautions to minimize damage caused by localized strong winds and lightning.
Strong winds will continue to be the main weather concern. Wind speeds of 40 to 50 kmph are expected at times over the western slopes of the central hills, the Northern, North-Central and North-Western provinces, and in the Hambantota and Trincomalee districts. Residents in these areas should secure loose outdoor objects and remain cautious, especially when travelling.
Sea Area Forecast
Marine conditions are expected to remain unsettled during the next 24 hours. Showers or thundershowers may occur in the sea areas extending from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle.
South-westerly winds will prevail with speeds of 30–40 kmph, increasing to 50–60 kmph in the sea areas from Kankasanthurai to Kalpitiya via Mannar and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota. Other sea areas may also experience winds of up to 50 kmph.
The seas off these coastal areas will be rough at times, while the remaining sea areas are expected to be fairly rough. Wave heights may increase to 2.0–2.5 metres in the sea areas from Chilaw to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota. Fishermen and naval operators are advised to exercise extreme caution, as temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas are possible during thundershowers.
