The Department of Meteorology has forecast continued wet and windy weather across several parts of Sri Lanka on 28 June 2026, with showers, fairly heavy rainfall, and strong winds expected to affect both land and sea areas. Residents in vulnerable regions are advised to remain alert and take necessary safety precautions.
According to the latest weather forecast, showers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western provinces, as well as in the Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts. Some of these areas are likely to receive fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm, which could lead to localized flooding in low-lying areas and temporary disruptions to transport.
Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers may develop at a few places in the Uva Province and in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts after 2.00 p.m. The public is advised to remain cautious during thunderstorms, as they may be accompanied by lightning and sudden strong winds.
In addition to the rain, fairly strong winds of 30–40 kmph are expected at times over the western slopes of the central hills, the North-Central, North-Western and Southern provinces, and in the Trincomalee district. People are encouraged to secure loose outdoor objects and avoid sheltering under trees during periods of strong winds and lightning.
Marine Weather Forecast
Weather conditions at sea will also remain unsettled over the next 24 hours. Showers or thundershowers are expected at several places in the sea areas extending from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle.
South-westerly winds will prevail with speeds of 30–40 kmph, increasing up to 50–60 kmph at times in the sea areas from Kankasanthurai to Kalpitiya via Mannar and from Hambantota to Pottuvil. Winds may also reach 50 kmph along the coastal waters from Kalpitiya to Hambantota via Colombo, Galle and Matara.
These conditions will cause rough seas in the northern and southeastern coastal waters, while the southwestern coastal areas will experience fairly rough seas. Wave heights are expected to rise between 2.0 and 3.0 metres from Chilaw to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota. There is also a possibility of swell surges affecting nearshore waters from Beruwala to Matara via Galle.
Fishermen, naval operators and beachgoers are strongly advised to exercise extreme caution, as temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can develop during thundershowers.
