SRI LANKA WEATHER FORECAST FOR TODAY,13 MAY 2026

The Department of Meteorology has warned that the current rainy conditions affecting Sri Lanka will continue over the next few days due to a low-pressure area persisting northeast of the island. The weather system is expected to move gradually northward, but its influence will continue to bring widespread showers, thunderstorms, and heavy rainfall across many parts of the country.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-Western, and Northern provinces, as well as in the districts of Anuradhapura, Trincomalee, Galle, and Matara. Rain and thunderstorms are also expected in other areas after 1.00 p.m.

Heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is likely in several locations, particularly in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-Western, and Uva provinces, and in the districts of Ampara, Batticaloa, Galle, and Matara. Residents in these areas are advised to remain alert for localized flooding, waterlogging, and disruptions to transport.

The general public is strongly urged to take precautions against lightning and temporary strong winds that may accompany thundershowers.

Sea Areas Around Sri Lanka

The same low-pressure system is also affecting sea conditions around the island. Wind speeds and rainfall are expected to increase in surrounding sea areas over the coming days. Naval and fishing communities are advised to closely monitor future forecasts and bulletins.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in all sea areas around Sri Lanka. Winds will be southwesterly at 25–35 kmph, increasing up to 50 kmph at times in the coastal waters from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle.

These sea areas will be rough at times, while other surrounding waters will remain moderate. During thundershowers, temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected.

People living in flood-prone areas and those engaged in marine activities should stay updated and take necessary safety measures as wet weather conditions continue across Sri Lanka.
