An increase in rainfall is expected across Sri Lanka from 06 May as the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) continues to influence the island’s weather. This system, where winds from the Northern and Southern Hemispheres meet, typically brings enhanced cloud formation and widespread showers.
According to the forecast, showers or thundershowers will occur at most places in the island after 1.00 p.m. Cloudy skies are expected to prevail over the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern and Uva provinces, as well as in the Ampara district. In addition, morning showers are also likely in these areas, indicating a generally wet and overcast day.
Heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is likely at some locations, particularly in the Sabaragamuwa, Central and Uva provinces and in the districts of Ampara, Batticaloa, Galle, Matara and Polonnaruwa. These intense downpours may lead to localized flooding and disruptions, especially in low-lying areas.
Misty conditions can also be expected during the early hours of the morning in parts of the Central, Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces, reducing visibility for motorists.
The public is strongly advised to take necessary precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
Sea Areas Forecast (Next 24 Hours)
Showers or thundershowers will occur in the sea areas around the island. Winds will be south-westerly with speeds of 25–35 kmph, increasing up to 45 kmph at times in sea areas from Puttalam to Kankasanthurai via Mannar and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.
Sea conditions will be fairly rough at times in these areas, while other sea areas around the island will remain moderate. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.
