Weather conditions across Sri Lanka on 02 February 2026 are expected to remain unsettled, with showers and thundershowers affecting several regions of the island throughout the day. Several spells of showers will occur in the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Uva, and Central provinces, as well as in the Hambantota district, bringing intermittent rainfall and cloudy skies.
During the afternoon hours after 2.00 p.m., showers or thundershowers are likely at several places in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, along with the Galle and Matara districts. Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm is expected at some locations, particularly during intense thundershower activity. These weather conditions may be accompanied by temporary localized strong winds and lightning, posing potential risks to life and property.
In the early morning hours, misty conditions can be expected at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Central provinces, as well as in the Galle and Matara districts. Reduced visibility may affect road conditions, especially in highland and low-lying areas.
Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas off the coasts extending from Pottuvil to Kankasanthurai via Batticaloa and Trincomalee. In addition, showers or thundershowers may develop at several places in the other sea areas around the island, mainly during the evening or night.
Winds will be north-easterly, with speeds ranging from 25 to 35 kmph. However, wind speeds may increase up to 45–50 kmph at times in the sea areas extending from Kaluthara to Mannar via Colombo and Puttalam, and from Hambantota to Pottuvil. As a result, the sea will be fairly rough at times in these areas, while other sea areas will remain moderate. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.
The general public, fishermen, and naval communities are advised to take adequate precautions to minimize possible weather-related damages.
