Rains to Intensify Across Northern, Eastern and Uva Provinces from January 5
Weather conditions across Sri Lanka are expected to change from January 5, 2026, as a low-level atmospheric disturbance located to the east of the island continues to influence the island’s weather, according to the Department of Meteorology.
Showery conditions are expected to enhance over the Northern, Eastern and Uva Provinces during the coming days. Showers will occur at times in the Eastern and Uva Provinces and in Nuwara Eliya, Matale, Polonnaruwa and Mullaittivu districts.
Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm is likely at some places in the Eastern Province and in Nuwara Eliya, Matale, Badulla, Polonnaruwa and Mullaittivu districts. Several spells of showers will occur in Anuradhapura, Jaffna, Kilinochchi and Vavuniya districts, while showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the Western and Sabaragamuwa Provinces and in Galle and Matara districts after 2.00 p.m.
Strong winds up to 50 kmph can be expected at times over the eastern slopes of the central hills and in the Northern, North-Central, North-Western and Eastern Provinces as well as in Hambantota, Gampaha, Colombo and Monaragala districts.
The general public is advised to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers
