Rough Sea Conditions Expected Along Western Coast as Showers Affect Sri Lanka’s Sea Areas
The Department of Meteorology has issued a marine weather advisory warning of showers, gusty winds, and rough sea conditions in several sea areas around Sri Lanka during the next 24 hours.
showers are expected at several locations in the sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Colombo via Puttalam, as well as from Trincomalee to Hambantota via Batticaloa. In addition, isolated showers or thundershowers may occur in other surrounding sea areas around the island.
Winds will be northerly to north-easterly, with speeds generally ranging between 30 and 40 kmph. However, wind speeds may increase up to 45 kmph at times in the sea areas off the western coast from Puttalam to Galle via Colombo, potentially creating hazardous marine conditions.
The sea state along the Puttalam–Colombo–Galle coastal stretch is expected to be fairly rough at times, while the remaining sea areas around the island will be moderate.
Meteorologists further caution that temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas may occur during thundershowers, posing risks to small fishing vessels and coastal navigation.
The Department of Meteorology advises fishermen, naval and coastal operators, and the general public to exercise extra caution, remain attentive to updated marine forecasts, and avoid venturing into rough sea areas when conditions deteriorate.
