Heavy Rainfall and Strong Winds Expected Across Several Parts of Sri Lanka Tomorrow
The Department of Meteorology forecasts unsettled weather conditions across several parts of Sri Lanka on December 30, with fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm expected in some regions.
According to the latest forecast, showers will occur at times in the Northern, Eastern, and Uva provinces, as well as in the districts of Matale, Nuwara Eliya, and Polonnaruwa. Meteorologists warn that isolated locations within these areas may experience fairly heavy rain, increasing the risk of localized flooding and landslides, particularly in vulnerable and low-lying regions.
In addition, several spells of showers are expected in the Kandy and Anuradhapura districts, bringing intermittent wet conditions to parts of the Central and North-Central regions.
Afternoon and evening showers or thundershowers may also develop at a few places in the Sabaragamuwa and Southern provinces, including the Kalutara district, especially after 2.00 p.m. These thundershowers could be accompanied by temporary strong winds and lightning.
The forecast further indicates that fairly strong winds of around 40 kmph may occur at times over the eastern slopes of the central hills, the Northern, North-Central, and North-Western provinces, as well as in Hambantota, Monaragala, and Trincomalee districts.
Meanwhile, misty conditions are expected during the early morning hours in parts of the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Central provinces, including Galle and Matara, which could reduce visibility along roads, especially in hilly and coastal areas.
The general public is advised to take necessary precautions to minimize possible damage caused by heavy rain, temporary localized strong winds, and lightning during thundershowers. Issued at 2.00 p.m. on 29 December 2025
