Showery weather is expected to increase across the southwestern parts of Sri Lanka from today, 19 September, with several areas likely to experience intermittent rainfall. According to the latest forecast, showers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western provinces, as well as in the districts of Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya.
Fairly heavy rainfall of around 75 mm is possible at some locations in Sabaragamuwa Province and in the Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts. These areas should remain alert to periods of heavier rain, particularly as the showery conditions are expected to strengthen over the coming days.
Meanwhile, a few showers or thundershowers are expected in Uva Province and in the districts of Mullaittivu, Batticaloa and Ampara after 2.00 p.m. Other parts of the country may experience comparatively less rainfall during the forecast period.
The public is advised to take adequate precautions during thundershowers, as temporary localized strong winds and lightning may occur. People should remain attentive to changing weather conditions, particularly in areas experiencing heavy showers.
Sea Areas Around Sri Lanka
Weather conditions over the surrounding seas will also require attention. A low-pressure area is likely to form over the Andaman Sea in the Bay of Bengal around 19 September. Under its influence, wind speeds over the Bay of Bengal are expected to increase during the next few days.
Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the sea areas extending from Negombo to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle. A few showers or thundershowers may also develop in other sea areas during the evening or night.
South-westerly winds will prevail, with speeds of around 25–35 kmph. Winds may strengthen to 50–60 kmph at times in the sea areas from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota. Winds may also reach up to 50 kmph in the sea areas extending from Puttalam to Kankasanthurai via Mannar.
The sea areas from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota will be rough at times, while the sea areas from Puttalam to Kankasanthurai via Mannar will be fairly rough. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas are possible during thundershowers.
