Sri Lanka Weather Forecast for 29 August 2026: Showers in Several Areas, Strong Winds and Rough Seas Expected
Sri Lanka is expected to experience a mix of rainy and dry weather conditions on 29 August 2026, with showers affecting several provinces while mainly dry weather will prevail across much of the island.
Showers will occur at times in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as in the districts of Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya. Several spells of showers are also expected in the North-Western Province and in the Hambantota district. Meanwhile, mainly dry weather is expected to prevail in the other parts of the island.
Strong winds are likely to affect several areas. Winds of around 40–50 kmph can be expected at times over the western slopes of the Central Hills, Northern, North-Central and North-Western provinces. Similar strong winds are also possible in Trincomalee, Monaragala, Hambantota and Matale districts. Residents, motorists and those involved in outdoor activities are advised to exercise caution, particularly in exposed areas.
A notable astronomical event will also take place during this period. The Sun is expected to be directly overhead of Sri Lankan latitudes between 28 August and 7 September due to its apparent southward movement. On 29 August, the Sun will be directly overhead at several locations, including Pallawarayankaddu, Akkarayankulam, Ariviyal Nagar, Puthukkudiyirippu and Ananthapuram, at around 12.11 p.m.
Sea Weather Forecast
The sea areas around Sri Lanka will also experience unsettled conditions. Showers may occur at several places in the sea areas extending from Chilaw to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle.
South-westerly winds will prevail over the surrounding sea areas, with wind speeds of 30–40 kmph. Wind speeds may increase to 50–60 kmph at times in the sea areas extending from Kankasanthurai to Puttalam via Mannar, from Mullaitivu to Trincomalee, and from Hambantota to Pottuvil. Winds may also reach up to 50 kmph between Kankasanthurai and Mullaitivu.
The sea areas from Kankasanthurai to Puttalam via Mannar, Mullaitivu to Trincomalee, and Hambantota to Pottuvil are expected to be rough at times. The sea from Kankasanthurai to Mullaitivu may be fairly rough.
Wave heights could increase to around 2.0–2.5 metres in the sea areas from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Matara. Naval and fishing communities, as well as people living along the affected coastal areas, are urged to remain vigilant and take appropriate precautions.
