Sri Lanka Weather Forecast for 06 August 2026: Heavy Rain, Strong Winds and Rough Seas Expected
The Department of Meteorology has warned that the active southwest monsoon will strengthen from 06 August, bringing intensified rainfall and strong winds to many parts of Sri Lanka over the next few days. Residents in the southwestern region are advised to remain alert as heavy rain, gusty winds and rough sea conditions are expected to affect both land and coastal areas.
According to the latest weather forecast, showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western provinces, as well as in the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara districts. Cloudy skies will persist across these areas throughout the day. Heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is likely at some locations in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the districts of Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Galle, increasing the risk of localized flooding and waterlogging.
Elsewhere, a few showers or thundershowers may develop after 2.00 p.m. in the Ampara, Batticaloa and Monaragala districts. Strong winds of 40–50 kmph are also expected at times over the North-Central, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central and North-Western provinces, which could result in falling branches, minor property damage and hazardous travel conditions.
The public is advised to take necessary precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds, lightning and heavy rainfall. Those living in flood-prone or landslide-prone areas should closely monitor weather updates and follow instructions issued by local authorities.
Sea Areas Forecast
Marine conditions are expected to remain hazardous around the island. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas from Puttalam to Trincomalee via Colombo, Galle, Hambantota and Batticaloa.
Winds will be westerly to south-westerly with speeds of 30–40 kmph, strengthening to 50–60 kmph from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle. Winds may further increase to 60–70 kmph in the sea areas from Hambantota to Pottuvil.
The sea off the coast from Hambantota to Pottuvil will be rough to very rough, and naval and fishing communities are strongly advised not to venture into these waters until further notice. Sea areas from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle will also be rough, requiring extreme caution. Additionally, temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.
