Showery conditions are expected to continue across several parts of Sri Lanka on 16 February 2026, with intermittent rainfall affecting both inland and coastal areas.
Several spells of showers will occur in the Central and Uva provinces, as well as in the Ampara, Batticaloa and Hambantota districts, bringing periodic rainfall throughout the day. These areas may experience moderate showers at times, contributing to wet ground conditions.
In the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, along with the Galle and Matara districts, showers or thundershowers are likely at several places after 2.00 p.m. Fairly heavy showers exceeding 50 mm are likely at some locations in the Ratnapura, Kalutara, Galle and Matara districts. These afternoon and evening thundershowers may be accompanied by temporary localized strong winds and lightning. The public is strongly advised to take necessary precautions to minimize potential damage and ensure safety during stormy conditions.
During the early morning hours, misty conditions may occur at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces, as well as in the Galle and Matara districts, leading to reduced visibility in certain areas, particularly in hilly regions.
In the sea areas around the island, showers or thundershowers will occur at several places off the coast extending from Galle to Batticaloa via Hambantota and Pottuvil. Additionally, thundershowers may occur at a few places off the coast from Colombo to Galle via Kalutara during the evening or night.
Winds will be north-easterly at 30–40 kmph, increasing up to 45–50 kmph at times in sea areas off the coast extending from Kalutara to Mannar via Puttalam, and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota. These areas may experience fairly rough seas, while other sea areas remain moderate. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.
