An Amber-level weather advisory has been issued by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre of the Department of Meteorology as a depression has formed over the southeast Bay of Bengal sea area, posing potential impacts to both land and sea areas around Sri Lanka. According to the latest bulletin issued at 1.30 p.m. on 7 January 2026, the low-pressure area to the southeast of the island has intensified into a depression and was centered near latitude 4.9°N and longitude 87.4°E at around 11.30 a.m. today. At that time, the system was located approximately 700 kilometres southeast of Pottuvil.

Meteorological observations indicate that the depression is moving in a west-northwestward direction toward the eastern coast of Sri Lanka and is very likely to intensify further into a deep depression within the next 24 hours. As a result, weather conditions across the island are expected to deteriorate from tomorrow, January 8, with enhanced showery conditions particularly affecting the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Uva and Central provinces. Increased cloudiness, frequent showers and gusty winds are expected as the system approaches closer to the island.
Given the evolving situation, special attention has been drawn to marine activities. Naval and fishing communities have been warned not to venture into both deep and shallow sea areas extending from Kankasanthurai to Hambantota via Trincomalee and Pottuvil from January 7 until further notice. In addition, from January 8 onwards, fishing and naval activities in deep and shallow sea areas around the entire island are strongly discouraged due to expected rough to very rough sea conditions and strengthening winds. Those who are already operating in other sea areas are advised to remain extremely vigilant and to closely monitor changing sea conditions.
The Department of Meteorology has emphasized that this system is being continuously monitored using satellite imagery, weather models and observational data. Further advisories, warnings and forecast updates will be issued as necessary depending on the development and movement of the depression. Authorities urge both coastal and inland communities to remain alert and informed, especially in areas prone to heavy rainfall and strong winds.
The general public is requested to stay attentive to official weather forecasts and bulletins issued by the Department of Meteorology and to follow guidance provided by disaster management authorities. Timely preparedness and adherence to official advisories are essential to minimize potential impacts associated with the intensifying weather system during the coming days.
