Sri Lanka Weather Forecast for December 20: Showers, Strong Winds and Morning Mist Expected
Issued at 2.00 p.m. on 19 December 2025
The Department of Meteorology has forecast unsettled weather conditions across several parts of Sri Lanka on Saturday (December 20), with showers, thundershowers, strong winds, and misty conditions expected in multiple regions.
Several spells of showers are expected in the Eastern, Uva, and Central Provinces, as well as in the Polonnaruwa and Hambantota districts, bringing relief from dry conditions while increasing the risk of localized flooding in low-lying areas.
Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers may develop after 1.00 p.m. in parts of the Western and Sabaragamuwa Provinces, along with the Galle and Matara districts, mainly during the afternoon and evening hours.
The forecast also warns of fairly strong winds reaching speeds of around 40 kmph at times over the eastern slopes of the central hills, Northern, North-Central, and North-Western Provinces, and in the districts of Trincomalee, Hambantota, and Monaragala.
In addition, misty conditions are expected during the early morning hours in several areas of the Sabaragamuwa, Western, and Central Provinces, as well as in Galle and Matara, which may reduce visibility, particularly for motorists.
The general public is advised to take adequate precautions to minimize possible damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers. Residents in vulnerable areas are urged to remain alert and follow safety instructions issued by authorities.
