WEATHER FORECAST FOR 17 DECEMBER 2025 – 2PM

Showery Conditions to Persist Across Several Parts of Sri Lanka on December 17

Colombo, December 17, 2025 — The Department of Meteorology forecasts that prevailing showery conditions will continue across several regions of Sri Lanka on Thursday (December 18), influenced by an active Easterly wave affecting the island.

According to the forecast issued at 2.00 p.m. today, showers are expected at times in the North-Central, Eastern, Uva and Central provinces. Heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is likely at certain locations in the Eastern, Uva and Central provinces, as well as in the Polonnaruwa district.

Meanwhile, the Northern and North-Western provinces may experience several spells of showers throughout the day. In other parts of the island, showers or thundershowers are expected to develop at several places, with fairly heavy rainfall above 50 mm possible in some areas.

The Met Department also warns of strong winds reaching 40–50 kmph at times over the Eastern slopes of the central hills, Northern, North-Central and North-Western provinces, and in the Trincomalee, Hambantota and Monaragala districts.

The general public is advised to take adequate precautions to minimize potential damage from temporary localized strong winds and lightning associated with thundershowers.
