Heavy Showers and Strong Winds Expected

Showers and thundershowers are expected across most parts of Sri Lanka this afternoon, Several areas may experience fairly heavy rainfall, while strong gusty winds and lightning could accompany thunderstorms.

Fairly heavy showers of around 75 mm are likely at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva and North-Western provinces. Similar rainfall conditions are expected in the Galle, Matara, Anuradhapura and Mannar districts. Rainfall activity is forecast to increase after 1.00 p.m., potentially affecting several parts of the island.

Misty conditions may occur during the early morning hours in parts of the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Uva provinces. Motorists are advised to drive carefully in areas with reduced visibility.

The public is urged to take adequate precautions to minimize possible damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Sri Lanka Sea Weather Forecast

Showers or thundershowers are expected at several places in the sea areas surrounding Sri Lanka during the next 24 hours. Winds will be south-easterly or variable, with speeds ranging from 20 to 30 kmph. Sea conditions are expected to remain slight under normal conditions.

However, temporarily strong gusty winds reaching 60–70 kmph and very rough seas may develop during thundershowers. Naval personnel, fishing communities and other marine users are advised to remain cautious and monitor changing weather conditions.
