The Department of Meteorology has issued an Amber advisory for severe lightning in Sri Lanka’s Ampara and Batticaloa districts, warning residents to remain cautious as thunderstorms are expected in several areas.
The advisory was issued by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre at 11:30 a.m. on October 27, 2026, and is valid until 11:30 p.m. on the same day, according to the bulletin provided.
Thunderstorms accompanied by severe lightning are likely to occur at several locations across both districts. Temporary, localized strong winds may also develop during these storms, increasing the risk of weather-related damage.
Public Urged to Take Lightning Precautions
The Department of Meteorology has advised residents to take appropriate safety measures to reduce the risk of lightning-related incidents.
People are urged to seek shelter indoors whenever thunderstorms occur and to avoid standing under trees. Open areas, including paddy fields, tea plantations and locations near bodies of water, should be avoided during storm activity.
The department has also advised the public to avoid using wired telephones and electrical appliances connected to power sources during thunderstorms. Travelling in open vehicles, including bicycles, tractors and boats, should be avoided when lightning threatens.
Residents should remain alert to fallen trees and damaged power lines, which may create additional hazards during severe weather. Anyone requiring emergency assistance should contact the relevant local disaster management authorities.
Weather Alert for Eastern Sri Lanka
Ampara and Batticaloa residents are encouraged to monitor official weather updates while the advisory remains in effect. Thunderstorms can develop quickly, and localized strong winds may occur with little warning.
Taking precautions early and moving to a safe indoor location when thunder is heard can help reduce the risk of lightning-related injuries and property damage.
The public should continue following guidance issued by the Department of Meteorology and local authorities until conditions improve.
