SRI LANKA WEATHER FORECAST FOR TODAY, 13 OCTOBER 2026

Heavy Rainfall Expected Across Several Provinces

Sri Lanka is expected to experience an increase in rainfall from today, 13 October 2026, as a low-pressure area may form over the southeastern Bay of Bengal. According to the Department of Meteorology, this developing weather system could influence weather conditions across the island and surrounding sea areas over the next few days.

Showers or thundershowers are expected at times in most parts of Sri Lanka today. Heavy rainfall of around 100–150 mm is likely at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva and Southern provinces. Meanwhile, fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75 mm is possible at some locations in other parts of the country.

The expected rainfall could affect several districts, particularly areas experiencing persistent showers and thundershowers. Residents are advised to remain alert to changing weather conditions and follow official updates issued by the Department of Meteorology.

Temporary localized strong winds and lightning may occur during thundershowers, potentially causing damage. The public is therefore urged to take adequate precautions during periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms. People should avoid exposed locations during lightning activity and remain cautious when travelling through areas affected by intense rainfall.

Misty conditions are also expected at some places in the Sabaragamuwa, Central and Uva provinces during the early morning hours. Motorists travelling through these areas should be careful because reduced visibility may affect road conditions.

Sri Lanka Sea Weather Forecast for the Next 24 Hours

The developing low-pressure system may also increase rainfall over the deep and shallow sea areas surrounding Sri Lanka during the coming days. Showers or thundershowers are expected in sea areas around the island.

Winds are forecast to be northeasterly or variable, with speeds ranging from 20 to 30 kmph. Sea conditions are expected to remain slight to moderate under normal conditions. However, temporarily strong gusty winds reaching 60–70 kmph and very rough seas may occur during thundershowers.

The Department of Meteorology has requested naval and fishing communities to remain attentive to future weather forecasts and official bulletins regarding the developing low-pressure area. Fishermen and other maritime communities should closely monitor updates before planning activities at sea.

The public is advised to follow official weather information as rainfall conditions may intensify over the next few days.
