Sri Lanka is expected to experience rainy and windy weather conditions on Wednesday, 23 September 2026, particularly across the southwestern parts of the island.A depression located over the northwest Bay of Bengal, northeast of Sri Lanka, is expected to intensify into a deep depression within the next 12 hours. Although the system is not expected to have a direct impact on Sri Lanka, its associated wind flow is likely to maintain rainy conditions over the country.
Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and North-western provinces, as well as in the Galle and Matara districts. Heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is possible at some locations in these areas. Several spells of showers may also occur in the North-Central Province and Mannar district.
Strong winds of around 40–50 kmph are expected at times over the western slopes of the Central hills, North-Central and North-Western provinces, and in Trincomalee, Hambantota and Matale districts. The public is advised to take precautions against temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
Sea Weather and Marine Advisory
The developing depression is also expected to increase wind and rainfall activity over the Bay of Bengal. Naval and fishing communities are warned not to venture into sea areas between 5°N and 22°N latitude and 85°E and 100°E longitude until further notice. Those already operating in these areas are advised to move away from affected waters and closely follow official weather bulletins.
Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in sea areas extending from Kankasanthurai to Hambantota via Puttalam, Colombo and Galle. Other sea areas may also experience showers or thundershowers during the evening or night.
South-westerly winds will blow at 30–40 kmph, increasing up to 50–60 kmph at times in the sea areas from Trincomalee to Chilaw and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota. These areas will be rough at times, while wave heights may reach around 2.0–2.5 metres between Puttalam and Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Matara. Very rough seas and strong gusty winds are possible during thundershowers.
