Sri Lanka Weather Forecast for 09 September 2026
Sri Lanka is expected to experience a mix of showers, thundershowers and relatively unsettled weather conditions on Wednesday, 09 September 2026, according to the latest weather forecast issued by the Department of Meteorology at 2.00 p.m. on 08 September.
Several spells of showers are expected in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as in the Galle and Matara districts. Residents and visitors in these areas can expect intermittent rainfall during the day, with cloudy conditions possible at times.
Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in the Uva Province and in the Batticaloa, Ampara, Polonnaruwa, Nuwara-Eliya and Matale districts after 2.00 p.m. Thunderstorm activity during the afternoon and evening could result in sudden changes in local weather conditions.
The public is advised to take adequate precautions during thundershowers, particularly against temporary localized strong winds and lightning. People outdoors are encouraged to seek safer shelter when thunderstorms develop and to remain alert to rapidly changing weather conditions.
Sea Area Weather Forecast
Several areas of the sea around Sri Lanka will also experience showers during the next 24 hours. A few showers may occur in the sea areas extending from Puttalam to Matara via Colombo and Galle.
During the evening or night, showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in the sea areas extending from Trincomalee to Pottuvil via Batticaloa.
Winds around the island are expected to be south-westerly, with speeds generally ranging from 30 to 40 kmph. Wind speeds may occasionally increase to 50–60 kmph in the sea areas extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil. Winds may also reach up to 50 kmph at times in the sea areas extending from Chilaw to Trincomalee via Mannar and Kankesanthurai.
Sea conditions are expected to become rough at times in the waters from Hambantota to Pottuvil, while the sea areas from Chilaw to Trincomalee via Mannar and Kankesanthurai may become fairly rough. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.
Overall, Sri Lanka’s weather on 09 September is likely to feature intermittent showers in several provinces, with afternoon thunderstorm activity in selected areas and stronger winds affecting some coastal and sea areas.
