Weather Forecast for 08 September 2026
Sri Lanka is expected to experience a mix of showers and thundershowers on Tuesday, 08 September 2026, with several areas likely to receive rainfall during the afternoon and evening. According to the weather forecast issued by the Department of Meteorology at 2.00 p.m. on 07 September, showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in the Uva, Central and Eastern provinces, as well as in the Polonnaruwa and Mullaittivu districts, particularly after 2.00 p.m.
Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75 mm is likely at some locations in the Uva and Eastern provinces. Residents and visitors in these areas should remain alert to changing weather conditions, especially during afternoon and evening thunderstorms.
A few showers are also expected in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces, along with the Galle and Matara districts. The distribution of rainfall is expected to vary from place to place, with some areas remaining relatively dry while others receive brief spells of rain.
The Department of Meteorology has advised the general public to take adequate precautions against temporary localized strong winds and lightning that may occur during thundershowers. People are encouraged to remain cautious in exposed locations when thunderstorms develop.
Sea Weather Forecast
For the sea areas around Sri Lanka, showers may occur at a few places in the coastal waters extending from Puttalam to Matara via Colombo and Galle. During the evening or night, showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in the sea areas extending from Mullaittivu to Pottuvil via Trincomalee and Batticaloa.
Winds are expected to be south-westerly at 25–35 kmph. Wind speeds may occasionally increase up to 50 kmph in the sea areas extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil and from Kankasanthurai to Puttalam via Mannar.
These sea areas are expected to be fairly rough at times. During thundershowers, temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas may occur. Fishermen, naval personnel and others engaged in marine activities are advised to closely monitor weather conditions before venturing into the sea.
