Weather Forecast for 06 September 2026
Sri Lanka is expected to experience a mix of showers, thundershowers and generally unsettled weather conditions in several parts of the island on Sunday, 06 September 2026.
Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in the Uva, Central and Eastern provinces, as well as in the Polonnaruwa and Mullaittivu districts, mainly after 2.00 p.m. Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm is possible at some locations in the Uva and Eastern provinces. Residents in these areas are advised to remain alert to rapidly developing thunderstorms and periods of intense rain.
Meanwhile, the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, together with the Galle and Matara districts, are expected to experience several spells of light showers. Although rainfall in these areas is likely to be less intense, occasional wet conditions can be expected during the day.
The public is urged to take adequate precautions during thundershowers, particularly against temporary localized strong winds and lightning. People are advised to avoid exposed outdoor areas and take appropriate safety measures whenever thunderstorms develop.
An important astronomical feature will also occur during this period. Due to the apparent southward movement of the Sun, it will be directly overhead Sri Lanka between 28 August and 07 September. On 06 September, the Sun will be overhead near Bentota, Thiniyawala, Iththakanda, Udawalawe and Kataragama at approximately 12.08 p.m.
Sea Weather Forecast
For the next 24 hours, showers may occur in sea areas extending from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle. Showers or thundershowers may develop in several locations from Mullaittivu to Pottuvil via Trincomalee and Batticaloa, particularly during the evening or night.
Southwesterly winds are expected at 30–40 kmph, while speeds may occasionally increase up to 55 kmph in the sea areas from Hambantota to Pottuvil and from Kankasanthurai to Puttalam via Mannar.
These sea areas may become fairly rough at times, with temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas possible during thundershowers. Mariners and fishing communities are therefore advised to remain cautious and monitor weather updates.
