Sri Lanka is expected to experience unsettled weather conditions in several parts of the island on Thursday, August 13, 2026.
Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as in the Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara districts. Residents and motorists in these areas should remain alert as periods of rain could affect visibility and road conditions.
Several spells of showers may also occur in the North-Western Province during the day. Meanwhile, a few places in the Uva Province and the Batticaloa, Ampara and Mullaitivu districts may experience showers or thundershowers after 2.00 p.m.
The public is advised to take adequate precautions during thunderstorms. Temporary localized strong winds and lightning can occur during thundershowers, creating risks for people outdoors and potentially causing damage to property and infrastructure. People are encouraged to seek shelter indoors and avoid exposed locations during lightning activity.
Sea Weather Forecast
The sea areas around Sri Lanka will also experience unsettled conditions during the next 24 hours. Showers may occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle.
South-westerly winds are expected across the surrounding sea areas, with wind speeds generally between 30 and 40 kmph. Winds may occasionally strengthen up to 50 kmph in the sea areas extending from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota and from Chilaw to Kankasanthurai via Mannar and Puttalam.
These sea areas may become rough at times. Naval personnel and fishing communities engaged in maritime activities are urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.
Furthermore, wave heights could increase to around 2.5 to 3.0 metres in the sea areas extending from Colombo to Pottuvil via Galle and Hambantota. Mariners are advised to monitor weather conditions carefully before undertaking sea activities.
