Sri Lanka Weather Forecast for 08 August 2026: Heavy Rain and Strong Winds Expected
Sri Lanka is expected to experience unsettled weather conditions, 08 August 2026, with showers, cloudy skies and strong winds affecting several parts of the island. The latest weather forecast indicates that the Southwest Monsoon continues to influence the country, particularly the western and southwestern regions.
Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces, as well as in Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara districts. Cloudy skies are expected to prevail over these areas throughout the day. Heavy rainfall of around 100 mm is possible at some locations in Sabaragamuwa Province and in Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts.
Strong winds will also remain a concern. Wind speeds of around 40–50 kmph can be expected at times over the North-central, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central and North-western provinces. The public is advised to take necessary precautions against temporary localized strong winds, lightning and possible damage during thundershowers.
Rough and Very Rough Seas Expected
Sea conditions around Sri Lanka are expected to become hazardous during the next 24 hours. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas extending from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle.
Westerly to south-westerly winds will blow at speeds of around 30–40 kmph. However, wind speeds could increase significantly to 60–70 kmph at times in the sea areas extending from Kalpitiya to Colombo and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota. Winds may also increase up to 50–60 kmph in the sea areas extending from Batticaloa to Kalpitiya via Trincomalee, Kankasanthurai and Mannar, as well as from Colombo to Matara via Galle.
The sea areas from Kalpitiya to Colombo and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota are expected to be rough or very rough at times. Naval and fishing communities are strongly advised not to venture into these sea areas until further notice.
Other sea areas, including those from Batticaloa to Kalpitiya and Colombo to Matara, will also be rough at times, requiring increased vigilance from those engaged in fishing and naval activities.
Wave heights could increase to approximately 2.5–3.0 metres in the sea areas from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota. Temporary strong gusty winds and very rough seas may occur during thundershowers.
