Rainfall is expected to increase significantly over the southwestern parts of Sri Lanka from 03 June, with wet and windy conditions likely to continue during the next few days. According to the latest weather forecast, showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western provinces, as well as in the districts of Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya.
Residents in these areas should be prepared for heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm at some locations. Such intense rainfall may lead to localized flooding, water accumulation in low-lying areas and difficult travel conditions. People living in landslide-prone areas are advised to remain alert and follow updates issued by relevant authorities.
In addition to the rain, strong winds of 40–50 kmph are expected at times across the island. Temporary localized strong winds and lightning may accompany thundershowers, creating hazardous conditions for outdoor activities. The public is urged to take necessary precautions to minimize damage to property and ensure personal safety.
Marine Weather Forecast
Weather conditions at sea are also expected to deteriorate. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle.
Southwesterly winds will prevail with speeds of 30–40 kmph, increasing up to 50–60 kmph at times in sea areas from Mullaittivu to Pottuvil via Kankasanthurai, Mannar, Puttalam, Colombo, Galle and Hambantota. Other sea areas may also experience wind speeds reaching 50 kmph.
As a result, sea areas along these coastal regions will be rough at times, while other surrounding waters will remain fairly rough. Wave heights are expected to increase to around 2.0–2.5 metres in sea areas extending from Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota.
Naval and fishing communities are advised to exercise caution, as temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can develop during thundershowers.
