A slight increase in rainfall is expected across the southwestern parts of Sri Lanka from July 28, according to the latest weather forecast issued at 2.00 p.m. on 27 July 2026. Residents in these areas should prepare for wetter conditions over the coming days, while most other regions of the island are expected to remain largely dry.
Showers will occur at times in the Sabaragamuwa Province and in the Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts. Meanwhile, the Western and North-Western provinces, along with the Galle and Matara districts, are expected to experience several spells of showers throughout the day. Elsewhere in the country, mainly dry weather will continue.
In addition to the rainfall, fairly strong winds of 40–50 kmph are forecast at times over the western slopes of the Central Hills, the Northern and North-Central provinces, and in the Hambantota, Trincomalee, and Puttalam districts. Residents in these areas are advised to remain cautious, especially when traveling or engaging in outdoor activities.
Sea Area Forecast
A few showers may occur in the sea areas extending from Negombo to Matara via Colombo and Galle. South-westerly winds are expected to blow at speeds of 30–40 kmph, with stronger gusts reaching 50–60 kmph in the sea areas from Hambantota to Pottuvil and from Kalpitiya to Kankasanthurai via Mannar. Winds may also increase up to 50 kmph in waters from Kankasanthurai to Trincomalee via Mullaitivu and from Kalpitiya to Hambantota via Galle.
Sea conditions will be rough in the waters from Hambantota to Pottuvil and from Kalpitiya to Kankasanthurai via Mannar, while fairly rough seas are expected in other affected coastal areas. Wave heights may increase to 2.0–2.5 meters off the coast from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota. Fishermen and naval operators are advised to exercise extra caution before venturing out to sea.
