Sri Lanka is expected to experience unsettled weather conditions on June 1, 2026, with frequent showers, strong winds, and rough seas affecting several parts of the country and surrounding waters.
According to the latest forecast, showers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-Western provinces, as well as in the districts of Galle, Matara, Kandy, and Nuwara Eliya. Residents in these areas should be prepared for wet weather conditions throughout the day.
Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers may develop at a few locations in the Uva Province and in the districts of Ampara and Batticaloa after 1.00 p.m. Although rainfall in these regions is expected to be scattered, localized thunderstorms could bring sudden downpours and lightning.
In addition to the rainfall, fairly strong winds of 30 to 40 kmph are expected at times over the western slopes of the central hills, the Northern, North-Central, North-Western, and Southern provinces, as well as in the Trincomalee District. The public is advised to take precautions against falling branches, temporary structures, and other wind-related hazards.
The Department of Meteorology has also urged people to remain vigilant during thundershowers due to the possibility of lightning strikes and localized strong winds.
Sea Conditions
Weather conditions at sea are expected to be significantly rougher than on land. Showers or thundershowers may occur in sea areas extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle.
Southwesterly winds will prevail over the surrounding seas, with speeds of 30–40 kmph. Wind speeds could increase to 60–65 kmph at times in sea areas from Mullaittivu to Chilaw via Kankasanthurai and Mannar, and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota.
These sea areas are expected to be very rough, while other waters around the island will remain fairly rough. Wave heights may rise to between 2.0 and 2.5 meters in coastal waters extending from Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota.
Fishermen, naval operators, and coastal communities are advised to exercise extreme caution as strong gusty winds and very rough seas can occur during thundershowers.
