The Department of Meteorology says the prevailing rainy weather across Sri Lanka will continue over the next two days as the low-pressure area located northeast of the island still persists. Although the system is expected to gradually move away from the country and weaken within the next 48 hours, its influence will continue to bring widespread showers, thunderstorms, and strong winds.
Showers or thundershowers are expected at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern, North-Western and Northern provinces, as well as in the Anuradhapura District. Heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is likely in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and North-Western provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts.
Other parts of the island can also expect showers or thundershowers after 1.00 p.m. Residents are advised to take precautions against temporary localized strong winds, lightning, and possible flooding in low-lying areas.
Weather Forecast for Sea Areas Around Sri Lanka
Rainy and windy conditions are expected to intensify over the sea areas surrounding the island. Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in all sea areas around Sri Lanka.
Winds will be westerly to south-westerly with speeds of 25–35 kmph, increasing up to 50–60 kmph at times in the sea areas from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota.
These sea areas will be rough at times, while other sea areas will be moderate. Swell waves of about 2.0 to 2.5 meters are expected from Chilaw to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota.
Naval and fishing communities are strongly advised to stay alert and monitor future weather bulletins issued by the Department of Meteorology. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can occur during thundershowers.
