Flood Warning Issued for Low-Lying Areas Along Deduru Oya as Reservoir Releases Water

The Irrigation Department has issued a flood warning for several low-lying areas along the Deduru Oya following heavy rainfall in the upper and middle reaches of the river basin.

According to the Hydrology and Disaster Management Division of the Irrigation Department, water levels in the Deduru Oya are approaching flood level. As a precautionary measure, the spillway gates of the Deduru Oya Reservoir have been opened, allowing a substantial volume of water to flow into the river.

Water is currently being released from the reservoir at approximately 16,500 cubic feet per second. Authorities have warned that the discharge rate could be increased further depending on the volume of water flowing into the reservoir.

The situation has raised concerns about possible flooding in low-lying areas along the Deduru Oya basin, particularly if heavy rainfall continues and water inflows increase.

Areas Under Deduru Oya Flood Warning

The flood warning covers vulnerable low-lying areas within the following Divisional Secretariat Divisions:

  • Wariyapola
  • Nikaweratiya
  • Maho
  • Kobeigane
  • Bingiriya
  • Pallama
  • Chilaw
  • Arachchikattuwa
  • Rasnayakapura

Residents living in these areas have been strongly advised to remain alert and take appropriate precautions in response to the rising water levels and reservoir water releases.

Motorists travelling along roads in the affected locations have also been urged to exercise extreme caution, as flooding could affect road conditions and make some routes dangerous or impassable.

Authorities Urge Residents to Remain Vigilant

The Irrigation Department has requested disaster management authorities to take the necessary precautionary measures to minimise potential risks to people and property.

Residents in flood-prone locations are advised to monitor official announcements, remain aware of changing river conditions and follow instructions issued by local authorities. People living close to the river and in low-lying areas should be particularly cautious as water levels and discharge rates may change depending on rainfall and reservoir inflows.

The warning was issued by Engineer L.S. Sooriyabandara, Director of Irrigation (Hydrology and Disaster Management) at the Irrigation Department.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as water continues to be released from the Deduru Oya Reservoir. Residents in the affected areas are urged to take the warning seriously and remain prepared for possible flooding.
