SRI LANKA WEATHER FORECAST FOR TOMORROW, 25 OCTOBER 2026

Heavy Rainfall of 100 mm Possible in Several Areas

Sri Lanka is expected to experience increased rainfall over several parts of the island on Sunday, 25 October 2026, as a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal intensifies. Heavy rainfall of around 100 mm is possible in some areas, while fairly strong winds and lightning may also affect parts of the country.

Bay of Bengal Low-Pressure System Expected to Intensify

The low-pressure area currently located over the Bay of Bengal, near the North Andaman Islands, is very likely to develop into a depression on 24 October. The system is expected to move west-northwestwards and strengthen into a deep depression by 25 October.

According to the forecast, the system is further expected to develop into a cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal by the morning of 26 October 2026.

Although the system is not expected to directly affect Sri Lanka, its associated wind flow is likely to bring increased rainfall to the southwestern parts of the island over the next few days.

Heavy Rainfall Expected in Several Provinces

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Northern and North-Western provinces. Rainfall is also expected in the Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts.

The Department of Meteorology warns that heavy falls of around 100 mm are likely at some locations within these areas. Residents, particularly those in areas prone to flooding and landslides, should remain alert to changing weather conditions and follow official advisories.

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the Uva Province and in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts after 1.00 p.m.

Fairly Strong Winds and Lightning Warning

Fairly strong winds, reaching speeds of 30–40 kmph, can be expected at times over the western slopes of the Central Hills, the Northern, North-Central and North-Western provinces, and the Trincomalee, Hambantota and Matale districts.

The public is advised to take adequate precautions to minimize possible damage from temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers. People should avoid exposed areas during lightning activity and secure loose outdoor objects where necessary.

Rough Sea Conditions Expected Around the Island

The Department of Meteorology has also issued a warning for naval and fishing communities regarding the developing Bay of Bengal system.

Naval and fishing communities are warned not to venture into deep-sea areas bounded by latitudes 10°N–20°N and longitudes 85°E–95°E until further notice. Those already operating in these waters are advised to move to safe areas and closely monitor future forecasts and bulletins.

Showers or thundershowers are expected at several places in the sea areas around Sri Lanka. South-westerly winds will prevail at speeds of 30–40 kmph, with speeds increasing to 50–60 kmph at times in sea areas off the coast from Trincomalee to Pottuvil, via Kankasanthurai, Puttalam, Colombo, Galle and Hambantota.

These sea areas may become rough at times, while other surrounding sea areas are expected to remain moderate. During thundershowers, temporarily strong gusty winds of 60–70 kmph and very rough seas are possible.

Naval personnel, fishing communities and other seafarers are urged to follow official weather updates and take necessary safety precautions.
