Heavy Rain Expected as Bay of Bengal System Strengthens
Sri Lanka is expected to experience increased rainfall over several parts of the island on 24 October 2026, as a developing low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal influences the country's weather conditions. The Department of Meteorology has warned of fairly heavy rainfall in several provinces, with some locations likely to receive more than 75 mm of rain.

According to the latest weather forecast, the low-pressure area that was previously located near Sri Lanka is moving westwards, away from the island. However, a new low-pressure area has formed over the Bay of Bengal near the North Andaman Islands and is expected to strengthen over the coming days.

The system is likely to develop into a depression by 24 October before moving west-northwestwards. Forecasters expect it to intensify into a deep depression by 25 October and potentially develop into a cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal by the morning of 26 October.
Although the developing system is not expected to have a direct impact on Sri Lanka, its associated wind flow could bring additional moisture across the island, increasing rainfall, particularly in the southwestern regions.
Rainfall Forecast for Several Provinces
Showers or thundershowers are expected at times across the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Northern and North Western provinces, as well as in the Galle and Matara districts.
Some locations in these areas could receive fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75 mm. Residents are advised to remain alert during thunderstorms, as temporary localized strong winds and lightning may pose risks.
Misty conditions are also expected at some locations in the Central and Uva provinces during the early morning hours.
The public is urged to take appropriate precautions to minimize potential damage from strong gusts and lightning during thundershowers.
Sea Conditions and Strong Winds Around Sri Lanka

Showers or thundershowers are expected at several locations in the sea areas extending from Kankasanthurai to Hambantota via Puttalam, Colombo, Galle and Matara.
Southwesterly winds are forecast at speeds of 25–35 kmph. However, wind speeds could temporarily increase to 40–50 kmph in sea areas extending from Kankasanthurai to Pottuvil along the western, southern and southeastern coastal belt.
These sea areas may become fairly rough at times, while other sea areas around the island are expected to remain slight.
During thundershowers, temporarily strong gusty winds of 60–70 kmph and very rough seas may occur.
Naval personnel and fishing communities are advised to closely monitor future weather forecasts and official bulletins issued by the Department of Meteorology as the Bay of Bengal system develops.
