Nilwala River Flood Alert: Minor Flooding Possible in Six Divisional Secretariat Areas

Significant rainfall has been recorded in the upper and middle catchment areas of the Nilwala River Basin, raising the possibility of minor flooding in low-lying areas over the next 24 hours.

According to the latest assessment of rainfall conditions and water levels at river gauging stations maintained by the Irrigation Department, minor flooding may affect low-lying areas within the Nilwala River floodplain in six Divisional Secretariat (DS) divisions in southern Sri Lanka.

The areas that could be affected are Akuressa, Athuraliya, Malimbada, Kamburupitiya, Thihagoda and Matara. Residents living in low-lying areas of these divisions are advised to remain vigilant and pay close attention to changing river levels and local conditions.

Motorists travelling through potentially affected areas are also urged to exercise extreme caution, particularly when crossing roads near rivers, canals and other low-lying locations. Floodwater may affect road conditions and create difficulties for commuters.

Disaster management authorities have been requested to take the necessary precautionary measures in response to the potential flood risk.

Residents should remain alert to official updates and follow instructions issued by relevant authorities. People in vulnerable locations should be prepared to take appropriate action if water levels rise or local flooding occurs.

Although the current assessment indicates a possibility of minor flooding, the situation may change depending on rainfall and river water levels over the coming hours.

The public in the Nilwala River Basin is therefore advised to stay informed and take precautions during the next 24 hours.
