San Diego is under a rare tropical storm watch as Tropical Storm Rachel approaches
Mexico’s northern Baja California Peninsula, threatening Southern California and
parts of the Desert Southwest with heavy rainfall, flash flooding, powerful winds
and coastal flooding.

The storm is forecast to make landfall early Sunday morning, bringing potentially
dangerous weather conditions to communities across the region. San Diego has only
been placed under a tropical storm watch once before, during Hurricane Hilary in
2023.

## **Flash Flooding Threatens Southern California and Nevada**

A Level 3 out of 4 threat for flooding rainfall has been issued for Saturday night
through Sunday across parts of Southern California, southern Nevada, southwest Utah
and northwest Arizona. The warning includes San Diego and Las Vegas, where numerous
flash flood events and significant impacts are possible.

Both cities could receive an inch or more of rain. This would be approximately twice
San Diego’s typical October rainfall and three times Las Vegas’ usual monthly total.
Heavy downpours could trigger flash flooding, particularly in desert areas where
the ground cannot quickly absorb large amounts of water.

## **Strong Winds Expected Across the Region**

The strongest wind gusts around San Diego are expected early Sunday. Gusts could
reach 25 to 40 mph in lower elevations and 50 to 70 mph in mountainous areas. Inland
locations across Arizona, southern Nevada and Utah could experience gusts of 45
to 55 mph.

Wind speeds may change depending on Rachel’s track, with stronger gusts possible
if the storm moves farther north.

## **Coastal Flooding and Dangerous Surf**

Coastal flooding is another major concern, especially along beaches and areas already
affected by high tides and powerful waves. Flooding could affect coastal roads and
damage structures, particularly during high tides on Saturday and Sunday.

A coastal flood warning is in effect from the Malibu coast and Los Angeles County
beaches to coastal San Diego County until Sunday afternoon.

The National Hurricane Center has also warned of life-threatening surf and rip currents
along the coasts of Southern California and northern Baja California.

Residents should monitor official weather alerts, avoid flooded roads, stay away
from dangerous surf and follow local emergency guidance as Tropical Storm Rachel
moves through the region.
