Sri Lanka is expected to experience enhanced rainy weather from the evening of Tuesday,
20 October 2026, due to the development of an atmospheric disturbance in the lower
atmosphere near the island, warns of heavy rainfall in several provinces, along
with thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds.

Showers or thundershowers are expected in most parts of the island after 1.00 p.
m. Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75 mm is likely at some locations in the Northern,
North Central, Central and Uva provinces. The Trincomalee District may also experience
significant rainfall.

Morning showers are possible in coastal areas of the Western and Northern provinces
and in the Puttalam District. Misty conditions may develop in some areas of the
Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Uva provinces during the early morning hours.

The public is advised to take adequate precautions against temporary localized strong
winds and lightning during thundershowers. Residents in areas expecting heavy rainfall

**SEA AREA FORECAST**

In the sea areas around Sri Lanka, showers or thundershowers are expected at several
locations during the next 24 hours. Southwesterly winds will prevail at speeds of
25 to 35 kmph. Wind speeds may occasionally increase to 45–50 kmph in sea areas
extending from Chilaw to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam.

These sea areas may become fairly rough at times, while other sea areas around the
island are expected to remain slight under the forecast conditions. However, temporarily
strong gusty winds of 60–70 kmph and very rough seas may occur during thundershowers.

Fishermen, naval personnel and others engaged in maritime activities are urged to
exercise caution, particularly when thunderstorms develop. The public is encouraged
to monitor weather updates from the Department of Meteorology and take necessary
safety measures as the unsettled weather pattern strengthens across the island from
Tuesday evening.
